The music video for ‘Gangnam Style’, the song by K-Pop star Psy, has become the most watched video on Youtube.
It won best video at this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards, has been a number one in 28 countries, holds the Guinness World Record for the most “liked” song ever with nearly 5.4m ‘Likes’ on You Tube and now it has become the most watched You Tube video of all time, notching up more than 808m views since it was posted in July.
It’s “Gangnam Style”, an ultra-catchy little ditty with an equally infectious dance to go with it, performed by an overweight, 34 year-old, slick haired South Korean rapper called ‘Psy’. Even so, it has stormed the music charts, spread like a contagion and sparked a global dance craze.
In the video the portly Psy dances as though he is trotting along on a horse, holding the reins and spinning a lasso. The song and video satirizes the consumerism of Gangnam, a rich suburb of the South Korean capital Seoul (pictured above).
The horse-trotting, lasso wielding dance craze has spread around the world like wildfire and includes as one of its many fans no lesser person than UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
The video also features the rotund singer reclining on a sun lounger resplendent in tight pink shorts, gazing longingly at a girl, also wearing tight shorts, dancing on an underground train whilst he occasionally gesticulates at another woman (you got it – also wearing tight shorts) exercising on a beach.
Previously, Justin Bieber’s 2010 teenybopper hit ‘Baby’ held the record for the most YouTube views and it was Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, who was the first person in the US to tweet a link to the Gangnam Style video.
There must be a lesson in its Psy’s success with Gangnam Style for all of us but the Kenya Forum just can’t work out what it is! If you could bottle it you’d be rich.
Would it work in Kenya? Lavington Style’? ‘Karen Style’? Raila, Uhuru or Ruto dancing away, waving an imaginary lasso in the air? OK, point taken, they already do that at political rallies…!
Take a look and tell us what you think…
