Who won what in the 2017 Oscars?

The 89th academy awards took place in a glamorous affair at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday.

Emma Stone scoped the Best Actress award, which saw her win her first Academy Award for her role as the struggling actress / playwright Mia Dolan in Damien Chazelle’s movie musical La La Land. She had been nominated for an Oscar once before for Best Supporting Actress in 2014’s Best Picture-winner Birdman but she never won.

Casey Affleck took home the Best Actor award for his lead role in Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, beating Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Denzel Washington (Fences) who had been nominated in the same category.

Moonlight won the best picture award after a stunning mishap that saw La La Land first announced winner of the same. No sooner had La La Land’s crew got to the stage in celebration and producer Fred Berger had started giving the acceptance speech than his fellow producer  Jordan Horowitz cut the celebration short with a shocking announcement.

“I’m sorry, no, there’s a mistake,” he said, storming from stage left. Moonlight, you guys won best picture. This is not a joke.” Said La La Land’s producer Jordan Horowitz a interrupting the acceptance speech.

This is not a joke,” Horowitz continued. “Moonlight has won best picture.”

Moonlight director Barry Jenkins responded to the incident by saying that “he wasn’t surprised by that they won, but at how gracious La la Land’s producers were.

“we’ve been on the road with these guys for so long and that was so gracious and generous of them, my love to La La Land, my love to everybody,” Barry said.

La La land had 14 Oscar nominations this year.
