A Kenyan film-18 hours won the “BEST OVERALL MOVIE” award in the just concluded 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) in Lagos, Nigeria. The Awards is the most prestigious film and TV awards in Africa.
A Kenyan film that is based on true events, surrounding a hit and run victim that was forced to contain in an ambulance for 18 hours due to lack of an ICU bed at the country’s main referral National Hospital, won the “BEST OVERALL MOVIE” award in the just concluded 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in Lagos, Nigeria.
18 hours captures the sad story of Alex Madaga, which revealed the crisis in the country’s public healthcare when in 2015, the hit and run victim, who had survived the fatal road accident ended up dying after he was forced to contain in an ambulance for 18 hours after private hospitals refused to admit him because he had no medical insurance while Kenyatta hospital could not take him in as all beds were occupied.
The most Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is the most prestigious film and TV awards in Africa.
18 hours, which had made history as being the first Kenyan picture to be nominated for the Best Overall film at the AMVCA, was among the biggest winners of the night after it bagged a total of three awards; Best Overall movie
Best movie in East Africa and Best Editor (Mark Maina).
The film is written by Kevin Njue and directed by Phoebe Ruguru. 18 Hours opened to theatres across East Africa on 10 November 2017 to a sold-out premiere.
The cast includes Nick Ndeda, Sue Wanjiru, Brian Ogola, Isaya Evans and Shirleen Wangari.
