NASA co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka has embarked on his new assignment as a special peace envoy to Juba.

Kalonzo and Foreign Affairs CS Monica Juma flew to Juba on Tuesday, where they delivered President Uhuru Kenyatta’s congratulatory message to President Salva Kiir for implementing the South Sudan peace agreement.

During the burial of his late father last week, Kalonzo revealed that he was going to be president Uhuru Kenyatta’s “mtu wa mkono” / errand boy, a role that was not taken kindly by his Wiper party leaders.

“From today, let no one separate me and my brother Uhuru. I have accepted to run his errands. Those who will attempt to interfere will see my other side,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo is expected to head the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC), which is largely expected to monitor the South Sudan peace process.

His appointment is seen as an extension of the famous handshake between Uhuru Kenyatta and former opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Odinga was recently appointed African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

The Handshake

In March, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga shook hands at Harambee House, in a unity deal that brought about calm and political stability in the country after the disputed 2017 elections.

National Reconciliation

Two months later, During the National Breakfast Day, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto apologised to Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka for the hurtful things they said to each other during the electioneering period.

The handshake brought about The Building Bridges Initiative, which is aimed at creating a united Kenya.

During his visit to Kenya in July, Former US president Barrack Obama lauded the Uhuru/Raila unity deal and affirmed his support for the Building Bridges Initiative.
