Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and his Transport counterpart James Macharia have appointed a task force to constitute a framework to reform the chaotic boda-boda sector.

The 12-member task force on policy, legal and administrative reforms regarding public motorcycle transport in the country, has been given 60 days to execute its mandate and come up with a report on the same.

The move by the government to reform the boda-boda sector comes in the wake of the intensified traffic law (Michuki Rules) enforcement & road safety measures launched across the country by the two ministries.

The Boda Boda transport industry has been growing fast but has often been characterized by chaos with Road traffic crashes, injuries and deaths involving motorcycles rising drastically.

Some hospitals across the county, like Moi Referral even have designated wards for boda-boda accident victims.

Boda-bodas have also been blamed for increasing cases of insecurity and it’s one of the key reasons why the Nairobi county government barred outlawed boda-boda operators from operating in the Central Business District (CBD) early this year.

“We love the operators of boda-bodas; they are wonderful young people and we understand that this is an industry that provides employment, but we want to teach them to live in an orderly manner because that is how they will succeed. There will be no two ways about it. They too, have to follow the law,” CS Matiangi said.
