The famous South End mall along Mbagathi way, Lang’ata has become the latest major establishment to be brought down in the recent demolitions being undertaken by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), in an effort to reclaim riparian land.
South End Mall, which is owned by former Bobasi MP Stephen Manoti, had been marred by controversy right from the time its construction kicked off. There was a public uproar when construction kicked off with concerns raised on the mall’s closeness to Mutuini-Ngong River.
South End mall had been subject to flooding whenever it rained and had allegedly also been cited as the cause of flooding in Nairobi West, South C, and the entire Lang’ata areas.
In 2016, City Hall served Manoti with a 14-day demolition notice but the former MP moved to court to challenge the order.
