Kenyans have taken to social media to condemn Nairobi governor Mike Sonko for exercising impunity and double standards in the wake of the purported war against graft after a leaked video of a phone conversation between him and his Kiambu counterpart went viral.

In the leaked video, which appears to have been recorded by a third party in close proximity to Sonko, Waititu is heard appealing to the latter to have his wife, who had been arrested earlier today, released.

“wachilia mama tafadhaliwewe ni mtu wanguumesahau vile tumezunguka hii Nairobi na wewe/ please let madam go, have you forgotten how far we have hustled in this city together.

Sonko then affirms that he will have Waititu’s wife released but only her and not the rest of the people who were arrested alongside her, which the Kiambu governor protests.

Orders from above

“unajua hata navunja sheria kurelease mama lakini ni vile ni first lady kama wangu but these are orders from above, pigia Waita,/iam actually breaking the law by even releasing your wife, these are orders from above, call Waita” Sonko says.

Nzioka Waita is the Chief Of Staff, Office of The President.

Sonko further makes another phone call after winding up with Waititu and instructs a man on the other side of the line to release Waititu’s wife on a cash bail of about Sh 10,000 but ensure the rest face the law.

Susan Wangare, wife of Kiambu Governor Waititu, was among 15 people arrested on Wednesday over unapproved constructions in Nairobi.

SONKO CONTRAVENES UHURU’S “EFFORTS” TO FIGHT IMPUNITY

Sonko’s misdemeanour comes just two days after President Uhuru Kenyatta revealed that he has lost many friends and would not mind losing more on the war against impunity.
