All the 46 suspects charged with the recent scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS), including Lilian Omollo (Principal Secretary, Ministry of Service, Youth and Gender Affairs) and Richard Ndubai (Director General, NYS) have been freed on bail.

The suspects had been jointly accused of involvement in fraud at the NYS totalling Sh9 and had been remanded at the Industrial Area and Lang’ata Women’s prisons for about three weeks after a magistrate denied them bail pending investigations.

High court judge Hedwig Ong’undi however ordered their release on Tuesday, saying that there was no convincing reason from the state that the accused persons are likely to interfere with witnesses.

All the suspects have been ordered to pay Sh 5 million bond with a Sh2 million surety and Sh1 million cash bail.

The judge however laid out some conditions, which include; suspects barred from leaving the jurisdiction of the trial court (Nairobi),  blocked from having direct or indirect contact with the former staff of NYS, and they have also been restrained from visiting their personal offices for any reason unless in the company of a police officer.

They are also expected to report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations once a week. The suspects were also ordered to submit their passports in court.
