Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has confirmed Mbugua’s arrest
Former Kamkunji MP and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) nominee Simon Mbugua has been arrested for allegedly playing a role in last week’s assault incident that saw goons linked to Nairobi governor Mike Sonko assault former Nairobi Central Business District Association’s Chairman Timothy Muriuki.
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has confirmed Mbugua’s arrest over the incident but has not divulged further details.
Four men were captured on camera assaulting Muriuki at Boulevard hotel, where he had called a press conference. The goons accused him of mudslinging governor Sonko.
Following a public backlash over the incident, the police issued a Sh2.5 million cash reward for information that will lead to the arrest of the five men; Sh 500,000 on each of the four suspects, whom they say have gone under.
The five are facing charges of robbery with violence, which is a capital offence that attracts a life sentence.
Sonko has distanced himself from the goons and said that he doesn’t know them. Interestingly, a photo where the governor is pictured with one of the goons, identified by the police with an alias ….has resurfaced today and is making rounds on social media.
Lawyer Ahmednasir, who was the first person to share the photo on twitter, alleged that the photo was taken on Saturday in a wedding Sonko attended with the crook.
“The police are allegedly looking for the trio…and they attended this lavish wedding last Saturday with Hon Governor,” Ahmednasir tweeted.
