Learning in public universities has remained paralyzed following the lecturers strike that has carried on for six weeks now.

The university dons have defied a court order that said the strike is unprotected and have maintained that they will not resume work until the government implements the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Education Cabinet Secretary Kusu on Monday convened a crisis meeting with the council chairmen of all the 31 public universities and colleges to find a solution to the lecturers’ strike.

UASU OFFICIALS FACE THE SACK

Top union officials from the University Academic Staff Union (Uasu) and the Kenya University Staff Union (Kusu) are facing disciplinary measures and even possible sacking for defying the court order.

The inter Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) met on Sunday, and ordered vice chancellors to crack the whip on staff who would failed to report to work on Monday as ordered.

“IPUCCF urges the management of public universities to take stern action on staff in their respective institutions who do not report to duty on Monday April 9 as directed by court,” said IPUCCF chairman Prof Paul Kanyari.

Uasu Secretary General Constantine Wasonga has however maintained that the union will pursue justice up to the Supreme Court.

The lecturers moved to the appellate court on Friday after the Employment and Labour Relations Court ruled that their strike is unlawful and Justice Onesmus Makau ordered them to go back to work.
