Local media and sports personalities are top on the list of professionals who have been appointed as board members across 87 parastatals according to a special Kenya Gazzette published on Friday 2nd October 2015.

Cabinet secretaries appointed 342 new board members across 87 parastatals, majority of whom consist of youthful professionals, private sector CEO’s, media and sports personalities and a few notable politicians.

Radio host and Radio Africa marketing manager, Caroline Mutoko, journalist and Royal media services chief operations manager, Farida Karoney have been appointed to serve in the board of the Kenya Institute of Mass Communications (KIMC).

Celebrated news anchor Julie Gichuru has also been appointed to sit in the Brand Kenya board while Royal Media Services CEO Wachira Waruru,Ted Muthusi, Eric Kiniti (East Africa Breweries) Alison Ngibuini (filmmaker) Nicholus Moipei (father of the singers Moipei sisters) and actress Millicent Ogutu have been appointed to the Board of Kenya Cultural Centre.

BOB COLYMORE AND JOSHUA WAIGARA TO CHAMPION VISION 2030

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore and Kenya Commercial Bank boss Joshua Waigara have been picked to sit in the board of Vision 2030 so as to help deliver Kenya’s vision to make Kenya a middle income country within a generation.

CRITERIA FOR APPOINTMENTS

The recent appointments were made in line with the new code of governance for State corporations (Mwongozo) signed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in march this year following recommendations of the Presidential Taskforce on Parastatal Reform.

The guidelines give criteria for appointments and reappointments to boards as well as removals, rewards and sanctions and performance management.

One of the requirements for parastatal board appointments demands that they be composed of between seven and nine members at least one member be an expert in financial management.
