In a social media post announcing his arrest, Babu Owino alleged that he had been arrested for “attempting to overthrow the government”
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was on Sunday evening released on a free bond after a two days detention at the parklands police station for assaulting a security guard in Westlands.
Interestingly, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja,a jubilee party affiliate, facilitated Babu’s release. Sakaja condemned the police for unlawfully detaining the MP saying that the action was taking the country back to the “Nyayo days”.
“In as much as he has committed a crime, let him be charged before the courts. This notion and culture that you can arrest someone for an offense he committed a week ago on a Friday and keep him in cells for two days is playing politics and we are telling the police to leave politics to politicians,” Sakaja said.
Babu was arrested by Flying Squad detectives outside Parliament Buildings on Friday afternoon over assault and malicious damage to property allegations.
Nasa leaders are however linking Babu owino’s arrest to a petition filed against his elections.
Attempt To Overthrow The Government
In a social media post announcing his arrest, Babu Owino alleged that he had been arrested for “attempting to overthrow the government” as well.
“Been arrested. Held at Parklands. Charges are two. Harbouring intention to overthrow the government. Assault. It shall be well,” he tweeted.
A section of University of Nairobi students took to the streets on Friday demanding the release of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
The students were also demanding the release of their HELB money.
In September last year, Babu Owino was arrested for inciting the public to violence on social media. He was later released on a Sh500, 000 cash bail only to be re-arrested shortly after his release.
