Opposition legislators made good of their threat to skip President Uhuru Kenyatta’s address in parliament yesterday, during the official opening of the 12^th parliament.

The opposition argued that Uhuru does not have the power to convene or schedule the opening of the newly-elected Parliament.

Nasa co-principal Moses Wetangula, while announcing the stand by the opposition to skip the ceremony during a press conference at Okoa Kenya offices Monday said the outgoing president exercises limited powers during incumbency and therefore Uhuru cannot exercise that role as his election was nullified by the supreme court.

“That duty awaits the President who will assume office after being sworn in by the Chief Justice upon taking and subscribing to the oath of allegiance and the oath for the execution of the functions of office as provided by the Constitution,” Wetang’ula said.

SUPREME COURT JUDGES SKIP OPENING OF HOUSE

Supreme Court judges also skipped the event although their reasons have not yet been established.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto have launched a series of verbal attacks and threats to the Chief justice, David Maraga and the other judges over their decision to annul their re-election on the August polls.
