Relief for motorists as Lusaka and Bunyala round-a-bouts reopened. The two Nairobi round-a-bouts will be open for a brief time.
Motorists in Nairobi using Mombasa road can have signed in relief following the reopening of the roundabouts at Bunyala Road and Lusaka Road.
Governor Evans Kidero had announcement that the two roundabouts will reopen temporarily.
Motorists using the road have been spending more hours on traffic jam especially during peak hours, following the closure of major roundabouts in the city, a move that was adopted recently by the county government as a means of easing traffic in the city.
Roundabouts on University Way, Kenyatta and Haile Selassie avenues and Westlands will, however, remain closed.
Kidero, who was speaking at a press conference in city hall, said that the suspension would be a short term solution awaiting the opening of the Southern Bypass on Friday.
He asserted that the enormous traffic caused by the closure of the two roundabouts had been made worse by the closure of the southern bypass.
“We are expecting the bypass to be completed by Friday since the contractors are working tirelessly to meet the deadline. After completion all trailers will be directed to the bypass,” he said.
Kenyans had taken to social media under the hashtags #SomeonetellKidero and #KideroDrums calling for the barriers blocking the roundabouts to be removed over what they termed a futile attempt to deal with traffic menace in Nairobi..
The closure of roundabouts is line with a new plan aimed at curbing traffic in the city by replacing them with signalized junctions.
According to the Nairobi County government, it will cost Sh388 Million for the removal of roundabouts and construction of signalized junctions.
Kidero said that there are 241 road junctions in Nairobi which will all be covered by the project.
