Kenya has finished position fourth in medal standings in the just concluded IAAF World U18 Championships 2017 at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani Nairobi.

The “home of champions” bagged 15 medals; 4 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze.

South Africa ranked 1st, China 2nd, Cuba 3rd, Ethiopia 5th.

Kenya’s Jackline Wambui and Lydia Jeruto won Gold and Silver respectively in the girls’ 800m race while Leonard Kipkemoi Bett lit up the full packed stadium on Sunday when he led compatriot Cleophas  Mayan to a 1-2 sweep in the boy’s  2000M triple chase.

Edward Zakayo and Stanley Waithaka gave the country silver and bronze respectively in the boys 3000m final.

Kenya Produces Biggest Under 18 Championships Crowd In History

Kenya made history by producing the biggest crowd in the World Under-18 Championships.

On Saturday, there was a U-18 Championship record of 50,300 people while the morning session registered 37,500 fans in attendance.

Sunday saw the gates of Kasarani Stadium closed as facility full to capacity after 60,000 fans showed for the #IAAFWU18GrandFinale

World Under-18 Championships Local Organising Committee Chief Executive Officer Mwangi Muthee declared the championships a great success and hailed Kenyans for gracing the event in numbers at Kasarani.

President Uhuru congratulated the athletes who participated in the IAAF World U18 Championshipsfor making Kenya proud.

“My hearty congratulations to the entire Kenya Under-18 team that took part in the just-concluded IAAF World U18 Championships. By winning an overall tally of 15 medals, these young men and women have, once again, reminded the world of our defiant spirit of hard work, dedication and resilience. In itself, the team exemplified true patriotism by flying the country’s flag with great pride and representing the nation with real distinction. More importantly, these young men and women competed, and won, cleanly; further dignifying the sport through fair competition. Thank you for making Kenya proud,” Uhuru wrote on his Facebook fanpage.
