The National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders have called for speedy investigations into the murder of Ronald Lubya, a Mumias Sugar Company legal officer, saying that he was killed for refusing to toe the lines of a sugar cartel.

According to Nasa flag bearer Raila Odinga, Lubya was killed for refusing to give in to attempts by a cartel to have the company used to hide sugar illegally imported from South Sudan.

Raila also accused the government of killing businessman Jacob Juma the same way Lubya has been killed.

“The Jubilee government killed my friend Jacob Juma. Yesterday (Sunday), they killed Mumias Sugar Company Secretary Ronald Lubya. He opposed a scheme to import sugar from Sudan to Uganda. They wanted the sugar to be labelled that it had been manufactured by Mumias,” Odinga said.

Mudavadi asked the government to stop intimidating public officers and forcing them to raise money for campaigns through illicit means.

“This is definitely a murder disguised as fatal robbery. The young man declined pressure to endorse documents, which could show that the company had imported sugar. We want this investigated thoroughly because the lives of other parastatal heads are in danger,” he said.

Ronald Lubya was shot in the head at his rural home in Matungu constituency, Kakamega County, on Sunday night by three armed gunmen. He was rushed to the hospital but died on arrival.

Gang Raped

The gangsters then dragged Mr Lubya’s body into the house where they harassed his wife, demanding cash from her and even went ahead to gang rape her before escaping in her husband’s vehicle.

Western region police coordinator Moses Ombati said the car was later found abandoned at Kabula market, four kilometres away on the Mumias-Bungoma road.

Lubya had previously filed a report with the police in fear for his life.
