The government has launched an inquiry into the causes of the collapse of the Sh 1.2 billion Sigiri Bridge in Budalangi constituency, Busia County.

According to Infrastructure Principal Secretary Engineer John Mosonik, the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KURA) will conduct a detailed Geotechnical and Structural Investigation to establish the cause of the breakdown.

The ministry has contacted the investigative arm of Government to look into the matter to rule out any possible foul play,” Mr Mosonik said.

Mosonik also said the construction activities on the site have been suspended until a structural integrity report is concluded.

The Sigiri Bridge caved in on Sunday, less than two weeks after President Uhuru Kenyatta launched it, leaving 27 construction workers injured.

The bridge, which is being constructed by China Overseas Engineering Co (Covec) was designed as an aid to cross River Nzoia where several people have died in the past while attempting to get across.

The construction kicked off in February 2016 and its completion was scheduled for July.
