Former Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo has declared interest to vie for a political seat in the upcoming 2017 general elections.

Kimaiyo said that he will vie for Elgeyo Marakwet Senator in 2017 where he will be facing off the incumbent Kipchumba Murkomen. The former IG who was speaking at Kapsowar Catholic Church in Elgeyo Marakwet County during a funds drive, said his interest had been propelled by the need to serve the electorates and also to protect civil servants who have been unfairly haunted out of office, adding that he had served in the government for a good period and would use the experience to bring development in the region.

“My 35 years’ experience in the public service has given me an opportunity to work with three consecutive regimes where I handled sensitive issues, thus development matters at the county will not be hard for me. I stand for integrity and that is why I will use it to champion for development,” said Kimaiyo.

Murkomen, criticized Kimaiyo, saying his tenure at the helm of the police service was marked by incompetence.

Kimaiyo resigned in 2014 over what he termed as “personal matters” amid mounting pressure from the public to have him and former security CS Joseph Ole Lenku resign due to rampant cases of insecurity that had hit the country during their tenure.
