Kenyans’ political and regional affiliations are laid bare in the latest poll by Ipsos Synovate. Generally most Kenyans (67 per cent) would prefer President Uhuru Kenyattta to attend trial at the ICC majority of respondents in Nyanza (75 percent), Coast (63 per cent), Nairobi (56 per cent), Western (61 per cent) and North Eastern regions want the cases to proceed while majority of those interviewed in Central (54 percent), Eastern and Rift Valley would rather have the cases terminated.

CASE SHOULD BE TERMINATED…

20 percent of those who would like the cases to be terminated cited weak and compromised evidence by the prosecution as their main reason while 19 percent believed pursuing the cases will be a source of violence in the country and another 13 per cent were of the opinion that other perpetrators of the 20007 post election violence were yet to be indicated.

TRIAL SHOULD CONTINUE…

“Those who want the trials to continue give two main reasons for this, 64 per cent say that only the ICC will deliver justice to the PEV victims because of lack of faith in the Kenya judiciary. 28 per cent say the prosecution will end impunity thereby preventing future violence,” said Ipsos lead researcher, Tom Wolf.

The survey sampled the opinions of 2,060 18 year-old Kenyans both in rural and urban areas between the period of November 1 and 9, 2013. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews using hand held devices (smart phones) with 95 per cent confidence levels.
