Thuita Mwangi, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was arrested yesterday evening by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers over allegations of his involvement in the purchase of Kenya’s Embassy in Tokyo, Japan at an inflated price.

Thuita Mwangi will be arraigned in court today to face four charges while two other officials from the ministry, who include the Charge d’Affaires of the Tokyo Embassy Allen Mburu, will appear in court at a later date, vice chair of the commission Irene Keino told the media.

THE CHARGES

The three officials will be charged for abuse of office, wilful failure to comply with the law and applicable procedures relating to procurement, conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption and false assumption of authority.

DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS

Speaking at her office at Integrity House in Nairobi, Keino said that investigations into the irregular acquisition of the Kenyan embassy in Tokyo were completed early this month and the file sent to Director of Public Prosecutions for review of the evidence together with recommendations to charge the suspects.

“The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after analysing the evidence concurred with the commission’s recommendations and the three suspects will be charged in court,” she said.
