Three people were killed and several injured on Saturday in two attacks in Mombasa on Saturday evening. One blast occurred at the Reef Hotel, in the Nyali area of the city, where a roof of one building was ripped off and part of its wall collapsed, and the other in the Mwembe Tayari area, near the city centre, according to officials.

The three people killed died in the Mwembe Tayari attack after a grenade was thrown into a crowd, according to some reports.

A Kenyan police official was reported as saying: “We had two incidents: one at the bus station where three people have lost their lives. In the second incident that occurred near a hotel in Nyali there were no casualties.”

A military spokesman, Major Emmanuel Chirchir, said a hand grenade had exploded inside a bus. “One passenger allegedly entered the bus with a grenade,” he said in a tweet.

Kenya’s Interior Ministry has said that the second blast was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) left in a bag at the gates of the Reef Hotel.

No group has as yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, although Mombasa has been on high alert for possible attacks by Somalia’s Al Shabaab rebels or local Islamist militants.
