For how long will we remain disappointed? This is a question most Kenyan local football fans are asking themselves. Year in year out the national team is backed hugely by the fans only to keep on breaking their hearts.

Last weekend fans were left disappointed as Kenya’s ‘Stars’ were held to a dispiriting barren draw by the Flames of Malawi in their opening Group F World Cup qualifier match at Moi International Centre, Kasarani. Now they face Namibia at Windhoek in a must win match if they are to have any chances of topping the group.

After last Saturday’s performance, the fans’ loss of faith in the national team was confirmed for this World Cup campaign as they already had their doubts especially given the drama and confusion that was going on in the team.

Team captain Dennis Oliech had quit after disagreements with Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over image rights only to come back to the team late. Again there were issues with players delayed allowances. Some concerns were also raised over the team selection as some claimed that Kenya’s team coach Kimanzi was selecting his ‘friends’.

Kenya’s long-suffering football fans will continue singing the ‘get your act together’ song until we see our stars shining.

EURO 2012 EXCITEMENT

After a “long” break from football – well it has been a month since the English Premier League ended! – and a disappointing performance by our very own, attention has now turned to the Euro 2012 competition in Poland and Ukraine where the best of the best face each other fighting for the coveted trophy.

This is one of the tournaments that one cannot pick underdogs as almost all the teams are the ‘teams to watch’ and there’s almost as much interest in the tournament here in Kenya with the topic already trending on twitter, as there is in Europe. Poland played Greece last night to kick off the tournament, the match ending 1-1.

A tournament with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Eden Hazard, Frank Ribery, Wesley Sneider along with other big names surely is going to be exciting.

Until Kenya’s national football team (and their management) get their act together and even look like they might qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations or the World Cup then the nation’s football fans will continue to turn their attention to the action on the pitch on another continent.
