Karua Travels to Uganda to Represent Besigye in Court Martial Case

Kampala, Uganda – Opposition leader and constitutional Lawyer Martha Karua has traveled to Uganda to represent Dr. Kizza Besigye in a court martial where he has been detained since his abduction in Nairobi about 2 weeks ago.

The abduction of Mr Bisigye from Kenya breaches the constitution of kenya and Uganda.

Karua says that the charge sheet indicate the offences Bisigye is facing are reported to have been committed in Kenya and Switzerland, saying Uganda government has no jurisdication to any any crimes committed on Kenyan soil.

Karua, a constitutional lawyer has applied for a temporary certificate  to be allowed to practice in Uganda .

​​Dr. Kizza Besigye abducted in Nairobi

68 year ​​Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prominent Ugandan opposition leader, was reported abducted while on a visit in Nairobi where he had traveled to attend Martha Karua’s book launch. He was in the company of his long-term ally Hajj Obeid Lutale, who was also abducted alongside him.

Dr. Kizza Besigye has been a victim of rampant abductions and house arrests occasioned by President Yoweri Museveni’s government.

Besigye has contested and lost four presidential elections against President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986.

Uganda’s Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi said detectives had gathered enough intelligence to arrest Besigye while in Nairobi while Ugandan army spokesman Brig Gen Felix Kulayigy maintains that Besigye is being tried in Kampala and not Nairobi because “the crime that was planned was against Uganda and not Kenya”.

“We have a legal framework with our counterparts in Kenya to deal with matters that threaten regional security,” the General added.

Reports indicate that Besigye’s arrest had been planned for months and was executed with the help of some people who were close to him.

What is martial court? 

A martial court is a judicial court for trying members of the armed services accused of offences against military law.

Ugandan Human rights activist allege that the military court in the country has undergone metamorphosis under @KagutaMuseveni to evolved into an oppressive tool  against opposition voices.

“The military court in Uganda is a place where rhetorics override the constitution and the law just to please the @KagutaMuseveni regime. It’s a tool to silence opposition voices, not to understand the basics of law and the constitution” Dr.Anyama Alfred Berline said in a tweet.
