15 people die in road accident in Nakuru highway

Road accidents in Kenya continue to be on the rise even as the World Health Organization (WHO ) announces a  global decline in road crashes.

According to data from the 2023 Kenya economic survey, 4,690 deaths were reported on Kenyan roads in 2022 compared to 4,579 in 2021, presenting an increase of 111 fatalities, which is equivalent to a 2.4 percent rise.

At least 3,760 people lost their lives in road accidents by October 15, 2023, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The latest WHO global status report on road safety 2023 shows that since 2010, road traffic deaths have fallen by five percent to 1.19 million annually, around the world.

“The carnage on our roads is preventable. We call on all countries to put people rather than cars at the centre of their transport systems, and ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users.” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

15 people die in accident on Nakuru highway

15 people died in a road traffic crash on Monday night at Twin Bridge area along Nakuru _ Eldoret, after an accident involving a bus belonging to Classic Kings of Congo and North Ways Shuttle Toyota matatu.

The injured were rushed to Molo Sub-County Hospital.

While confirming the incident, The National Police Service appealed to all motorists to exercise extreme caution on our roads to prevent road crashes.

The latest fatal accident is the most recent in a list of several others that in the last four days have left about 30 people dead.

According to 2022 NTSA data on fatalities, of the 4,690 deaths in Kenya, 960 were attributed to losing control of the vehicles, 685 deaths could not be traced to any cause, lane discipline (529), overtaking improperly (501) while misjudging clearance distance or speed accounted to 334 deaths respectively.
