The government has introduced new punitive fines that are aimed at making the Nairobi expressway safe for motorists.

The new laws come in the wake of frequent accidents that have been witnessed recently on the Nairobi expressway, that have seen speeding motorists ram over tolling stations and other vehicles.

Matatus Banned from Using Nairobi Expressway

Transport and Infrastructure CS James Macharia, in a statement issued on Wednesday, temporarily banned matatus on the Nairobi Expressway.

“We temporarily restrict commercial passenger vehicles with a capacity of more than seven passengers from using the Nairobi expressway,” he said.

The CS also said that rumble strips will be erected Macharia said the government will Install rumble strips on the road to help drivers to slow down as they approach respective toll gates.

“Every life matters and the government is keen to avoid unnecessary injuries and loss of lives. This restriction takes effect immediately, “ he said.

Macharia also warned motorists to adhere to the speed limits applicable in every section of the expressway as indicated on the road signage adding that the maximum speed limit allowed on Kenyan roads is 110km.

“All motorists are required by law to adhere to the stipulated speed limits. We have installed speed cameras to enhance the enforcement of speed limits,” he said.

Macharia said traffic police will also be stationed at various locations along the expressway including toll stations.

On Monday, over 20 people were left nursing injuries following a road accident at the Nairobi Expressway, Mlolongo station, that involved an Embasava Sacco bus which, as seen in CCTV footage, rammed into a private vehicle, Prado TX, at the Mlolongo exit before overturning.

The accident comes a week after a similar accident left one dead.

The expressway, the first toll road in Kenya,  is a 27 Km four-lane dual carriageway, which runs along the median strips of Mombasa Road (starting at Mlolongo), Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way, (terminating at James Gichuru Road). It is to be tolled and will have ten interchanges.
