Ketanji Brown Jackson becomes First Black Woman in US Supreme Court

US Court of Appeal judge Ketanji Brown Jackson (51) has made history after she was confirmed to the supreme court on Thursday.

Ketanji Brown Jackson, who sailed through a senate approval process,  becomes the first Black woman to serve as a justice on America’s highest court in its more than 200-year history.

President Joe Biden had promised during his presidential campaigns to have a black woman appointed to the Supreme Court. The  President nominated Jackson to be an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States On February 25, 2022, Joe Biden, to replace a retiring judge.

The  Supreme court consists of the chief justice of the United States and eight associate justices. Each justice has lifetime tenure, meaning they remain on the court until they die, retire, resign, or are removed from office.

The president, with the advice and consent of the Senate, appoints a new justice when a vacancy occurs.

Prior to be appointed as a judge at the appellate court, Ms Jackson, a graduate of  Harvard Law School, had served as a clerk and District judge in the District of Columbia. She has also Jackson worked as a staff reporter and researcher for Time magazine from 1992 to 1993.

Former US president Barrack Obama had also appointed Jackson as vice-chair of the United States Sentencing Commission On July 23, 2009.

Ketanji Brown Jackson’s appointment to the US Supreme Court is yet another milestone for black women in America and another crown for Joe Biden, who gave the US the first female vice-President when he picked Khamala Harris as his running mate.
