Ruto Leads Raila in New Opinion Poll

Raila Odinga would lose the presidency to Deputy President William Ruto if an election was to be held today, according to a new poll by The Star Newspaper.

43 percent of those surveyed in the poll would vote for Ruto to be president while only 15 percent would vote for Odinga if elections were held during that period. The poll interviewed 3,127 people across the 47 counties between July 22 -30th.

Gideon Moi was the third preferred candidate with the poll showing that 5 percent of the respondents would vote by him, followed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

15 percent of the respondents were however undecided on who to vote for among all the candidates, even though The Star maintained that “the number of those who believe Ruto will be the next president regardless of their choice of candidate has remained constant at 49 percent in the three polls conducted by Radio Africa”.

South Rift (59 percent) and North Rift (56 percent are Ruto’s highest support base followed by Central Kenya (49 percent).

Ruto’s political party, UDA, was also the most popular with the poll showing that although 32 percent of Kenyans do not associate with any political party currently, another 24 percent said they feel closest to Ruto’s UDA, compared to ODM (15 percent,) and Jubilee Party (14 percent).
