Nairobi Ranked Among World’s Most Stressed Cities

Kenya’s capital has been ranked among the ten most stressful cities to live in according to 24/7 Wall Street,  a USA TODAY content partner offering financial news and commentary.

To identify the most stressed-out cities in the world, 24/7 Wall St. created an index of eight city- and country-level measures of health, financial well-being, and happiness, among other indicators of stress to identify the most stressed-out cities.

The city-level index particularly factored in things like the average one-way commute to work, Housing Affordability, Hours worked per year, mental health while the Country-level Index measures include: Poverty rate and unemployment by country.

Longest Commute Hours

According to the report by 24/7 Wall Street, the U.N. predicts Nairobi will become a megacity – cities with a population of 10 million or more – by 2040.

This expansion creates challenges such as providing housing, transportation, infrastructure, education, and health care, and with them, putting greater stress on urban dwellers.

With that growth comes traffic problems. The city has the eighth-longest average one-way commute, at 57 minutes, of any of the more than 560 cities reviewed on the list, and its workweek of 44 hours is the ninth longest of the 190 cities reviewed for the list”, the report says.

People in Nairobi work for an average of 44 hours per week and spend minutes 57 in one-way commute time.

The report further states that Crimes such as home invasions, armed carjackings, and kidnappings are sources of stress in Nairobi.

Other cities in the top 10 list of most stress out cities include;

  2. Johannesburg, South Africa.
  3. Cairo, Egypt.
  4. Athens, Greece.
  5. Istanbul, Turkey.
  6. Los Angeles, United States.
  7. Nairobi, Kenya.
  8. São Paulo, Brazil.
  9. Sydney, Australia
  10. Mexico City, Mexico
