IAAF 2015 Beijing: Nicholas Bett and David Rudisha win gold medals

Nicholas Bett is the man of the moment as he made Kenya proud by winning the first ever gold medal in the mens’ 400m hurdle. Bett won in a world leading time of 47.79 seconds beating Russia’s Denis Kudryavtsev who took silver in a national record time of 48.05 and the bronze going to Bahamas’ Jeffery Gibson in 48.17, also a national record.

Bett, a volleyball player who later turned to athletics, owed his victory to his volleyball background. “I believe my volleyball background has played a great role in my victory since running in lane eight did not worry me at all,” Bett said.

David Rudisha or King David as he has come to be known, summed up a good golden day for Kenya by reclaiming the 800m gold after struggling with a knee injury in a time of 1:45:84. Rudisha ran a slow first lap of 54.15 seconds, but fended off Adam Kszczot of Poland and Amel Tuka of Bosnia-Herzegovina, who won the silver and bronze respectively. “Today was more like a tactical race and that’s all I wanted to do,” said Rudisha.

Kenya now leads the table standing at the 2015 IAAF World Championships at the moment with four gold medals, three silver and two bronze.
